Global SD-WAN transformation success
Global transformation programmes are inherently complex, bringing together teams, budgets and technologies on a large scale. While challenges such as delays or rising costs can arise, with the right structure and focus, these initiatives unlock significant value and position organisations for long-term success.
This was the context for Pawel Rogalinski, Programme Manager at Saros Consulting, when he was asked to lead a global SD-WAN deployment designed to cut costs, improve performance and scalability, and build a more agile and secure network for the future.
Reset with Clarity and Ambition
When I began leading this programme, it was clear the network was under real pressure. High operational costs, inefficient centralised management, limited scalability and unreliable monitoring were restricting agility and compromising security. My goal was straightforward: simplify management, improve performance and deliver measurable cost reductions.
I took responsibility for coordinating the technical design, procurement and phased roll-out while keeping a close focus on risks, budgets and overall delivery. Just as importantly, I worked hand in hand with our engineering and solution architect teams to ensure our work was always aligned with both strategic objectives and operational needs.
We started with vendor selection, followed by a proof of concept and pilot deployments. Once we were confident in the approach, we moved forward with a phased global roll-out covering branch offices and data centres. Each environment had its own specific requirements, but I made sure consistency and standardisation were at the heart of our approach.
Managing Complexity with Precision
No transformation of this scale is without its difficulties. We faced supply chain disruptions, with hardware deliveries delayed due to changes in our suppliers. Our main deployment partner initially lacked the depth of experience required, which meant we had to work very closely with them to refine processes and build capability. The SD-WAN platform itself had limitations that needed careful navigation, and I had to quickly expand my own technical expertise to provide the right level of support for my teams.
These challenges forced us to adapt, collaborate more closely and maintain a disciplined focus on the end goal.
Outcomes That Matter
Despite the complexity, the results were significant. We achieved major cost optimisation by reducing operational and licensing spend and replacing expensive MPLS lines with high-bandwidth internet connections. Performance improved dramatically, with faster and more resilient connectivity.
This programme wasn’t just a network refresh; it was a change in how the organisation moves. We replaced legacy, carrier-bound connectivity with a centrally governed SD-WAN fabric that allows the business to change course quickly without sacrificing control or resilience. For the business, the impact is tangible: faster site launches, smoother cloud adoption, and a user experience that simply feels better. The network has shifted from a constraint to an enabler, supporting market entries, seasonal peaks and integration work without lengthy lead times.
We also gained far greater agility, making it much easier to add new sites or expand bandwidth without disruption. Security and monitoring were strengthened, giving us improved visibility and more proactive control. Operational efficiency was enhanced through centralised management and intelligent bandwidth allocation.
Leadership Insights
Looking back, several principles stand out for me:
- Invest time upfront in proof of concept and design. It is the best way to reduce risk later.
- Make sure your partners have the right skills to not only deploy but also troubleshoot effectively.
- Negotiate strong vendor support agreements so you can access expertise when you need it most.
- Build alignment across all IT functions because no single team can deliver this in isolation.
- Stay adaptable and willing to step into new areas when the project demands it.
Final Reflections
Leading a global SD-WAN programme of this scale was challenging but transformative. With preparation, resilience and teamwork, we were able to deliver real impact: reduced costs, stronger performance, greater agility and enhanced security. For me, it reinforced the value of clarity, collaboration and adaptability in turning complex programmes into lasting business outcomes.
