Project success through strategic leadership and collaboration
Missed deadlines, budget overruns and failed projects cost far more than money. They damage reputations, stall growth and close doors to future opportunities. Sandra Lewis, IT Project Manager at Saros Consulting, demonstrates how strong leadership and effective collaboration can turn struggling initiatives into measurable successes.
Collaboration and Leadership in Action
Successful projects share a common thread: clear leadership, effective collaboration and the ability to adapt when challenges arise. Whether delivering a complex technical upgrade or uniting diverse teams toward a shared goal, the right approach can transform outcomes and create lasting value.
When I joined a financial sector client’s project, their infrastructure upgrade was 18 months in and only 20 per cent complete. Planned for nine months, it faced delivery challenges caused by isolated teams, limited coordination and a lack of consistent leadership focus. I reset the structure by clarifying roles, setting measurable goals and establishing regular touchpoints. I created urgency by communicating further delays, compliance, and capacity risks, and launched targeted knowledge sharing with the vendor so the internal team could resolve system issues independently. This removed bottlenecks, accelerated delivery and reduced long-term vendor costs, leaving the client with stronger in-house capability.
With 15 years of delivering complex technical projects, I bring structure, clarity, and momentum to teams by combining deep project management expertise with strong people leadership, change management, and clear communication. This creates an environment where technical specialists can excel, information flows freely, challenges are addressed early, and everyone stays focused on the shared goal.
Collaboration Works Anywhere
Remote work does not have to slow momentum. During a data centre migration during the COVID-19 lockdown, I introduced Microsoft Planner to map tasks and simulate handoffs. Virtual role-play sessions uncovered dependencies that had been overlooked, allowing them to be resolved early. On-site and remote teams could track progress in real time, enabling the migration to complete successfully. This adaptability is central to Saros Consulting’s approach to keeping delivery on track in any environment.
From Stalled to Strategic
In one engagement, a data warehouse project had stalled due to misalignment between IT and the data team. I facilitated open sessions where both sides could share constraints, priorities, and objectives. This collaboration resulted in a redesigned reporting system that delivered faster insights, reduced costs, and met the business’s needs. It highlighted how aligning diverse stakeholders is essential to breaking deadlocks and moving projects forward, even in high-conflict environments.
The same principles applied in another complex assignment where I led the upgrade of hardware security modules across Europe and the US, each with unique cryptographic keys and simultaneous deployment. Success depended on meticulous planning, flawless communication and complete coordination between multiple teams, vendors and site staff. The upgrades were completed without incident, and in-line with all required compliance guidelines, demonstrating the value of structured leadership and cross-team alignment in high stakes projects.
